Background information about Waterfall of the Gods
Godafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, truly becomes a place of heavenly beauty when wrapped in its winter colors. Its awesome power means it continues to run even when the landscapes are concealed by meters of snow, yet the sheerness of the cold still overpowers parts of it and clads it in an armor of ice. In spite of its popularity in summer, and its accessibility on Iceland’s Ring Road, it becomes a vision of Arctic inhospitability as the seasons change.
The greatest challenge of this shoot was getting close to the waterfall in the depths of February; after weeks of heavy snow and unbroken months of subzero temperatures, trudging myself and equipment to a photogenic scene on the river edge was no mean feat.
Here, however, I was able to discover a composition that displayed the frozen feature in all of its majesty. In the middle of the image, I caught a spectacular display of icicles, framed on both sides by rushing water; with the long exposure turning these into deep blue blurs, the details of this central artwork became even more apparent.
With the backdrop, I wanted to not only include the mountain horizon, but for the whites of their slopes to blend into the grey sky behind, adding a deeper sense of the ethereal to this winter wonderland. I waited until the sun had reached its highest point for this shoot, but considering Iceland’s darkness at this time of year, the sky was still only lit to dusky levels. As such, the cloud cover was dyed a shade of pink, providing just a hint of vibrance to an otherwise colorless world of blue and white.
