Background information about Diamond Rush
The Diamond Beach is most often pictured in summer, when its twinkling icebergs glisten beneath the sun like something out of a fairytale. In winter, however, it becomes much more ominous.
Under a dark canopy of clouds, against the volcanic black sands, and beaten by the unforgiving waves of a freezing sea, it presents the potential for a much starker and more complex image. Getting as close to the shore as safely possible, I chose a spot where the icebergs were diverse in shade, some a piercing blue and others an ash black, yet similar in their jagged shape.
A long exposure allowed me to capture the movement of the waves as they surged around the bergs, creating white lines that drew the eye across the volcanic sands and into the ominous ocean. I had planned to compose an image where the sea bled into the clouds, devoid of color and life yet pregnant with mystery and menace. Taking such a portrait, however, was only possible until the sky broke.
All of a sudden, an ethereal column of magnificent orange light poured from above, defining the horizon and fanning out with its bright fingers. My priorities evolved with the conditions, and I could not be more grateful for how quickly I was able to adapt. Instead of shooting an image that portrayed just the brutality and lifelessness of Icelandic winter, I was able to include a window of hope for brighter, more forgiving days ahead.
As such, the final composition held the darkness I originally set out to show, yet provides the viewer with less of a macabre bleakness and more of a hint of promise.
