Background information about VALLEY OF TEARS

With its countless streaming waterfalls and the endlessly flowing river, it is little wonder why the Valley of Tears in Iceland has its name; in spite of this, it remains somewhat of a misnomer for the joy it brings to those who explore and photograph it. Truly, it is a perfect example of Iceland’s majestic wilderness.
Tearing open a moss-coated plain of lava, surrounded by distant mountains, devoid of any signs of human interference, and defined by its magical waterways, it appears to have been plucked from a fantasy world.
When setting out to capture it, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted; not only did I want to encapsulate a microcosm of this country on camera in terms of the landscapes, but I also wanted it basked in the kind of lighting that makes Iceland so special. The end of summer provided the perfect time; no snow had fallen on the terrain, allowing its beautiful details and contours to add depth to the composition, and the water was unfrozen, allowing me to capture the movement of the falls with a long exposure.
Most importantly, however, the Midnight Sun was just fading enough each night for the colors of sunset to paint the sky. Heavy cloud cover can ruin many shoots in Iceland, or make them. Here, they were an absolute blessing, catching the last rays and becoming dyed with blissful, ethereal shades of pink and orange. The resulting image allowed for a truly spectacular reflection on the kaleidoscopic, otherworldly nature that makes the Land of Ice and Fire such a magical destination for photography.
