With its countless streaming waterfalls and the endlessly flowing river, it is little wonder why the Valley of Tears in Iceland has its name. Despite this evocative title, the valley brings immense joy to those who explore and photograph it.
Capturing this perfect example of Iceland’s majestic wilderness was a deeply intentional process. When setting out to photograph the valley, I had a clear vision: to encapsulate a microcosm of Iceland’s diverse landscapes bathed in the magical lighting that defines the country.
The end of summer was the perfect time for this shoot, with the terrain free of snow, revealing its beautiful details and contours, and the water flowing unfrozen, ideal for long exposure shots of the waterfalls.
About the Valley of Tears
The Valley of Tears tears open a moss-coated plain of lava, surrounded by distant mountains, devoid of any signs of human interference, and defined by its magical waterways. It appears to have been plucked from a fantasy world.
Heavy cloud cover can often make or break a shoot in Iceland. For this particular shot, the clouds were a blessing, catching the last rays of the Midnight Sun as it faded, and becoming dyed with ethereal shades of pink and orange. This created a spectacular reflection in the valley's waters, highlighting the kaleidoscopic, otherworldly nature that makes Iceland such a magical destination for photography.
