Volcanic forces are among nature's most awe-inspiring and fearsome phenomena. Capturing the raw power and primordial beauty of an eruption is a challenging yet exhilarating endeavor.
When the Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted in 2021, it presented a unique opportunity to witness and photograph the dramatic interplay of fire and earth. To truly capture the intensity of this event, I flew to the region and landed on a nearby hill, as close as safety allowed. With the lava continuously flowing, we had to adapt our landing locations daily, ensuring we remained at a safe distance from the molten fury below.
Standing on that hill, I began to form a composition in my mind that combined the fiery spectacle with the elements of the underworld. This unique perspective, reminiscent of a scene from Mordor, highlights the stark contrast between the glowing molten lava and the desolate, lifeless surroundings of the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The region is teeming with sulphurous gas, making every photoshoot a test of patience and timing. On an unlucky day, the gas clouds the view and makes breathing exceptionally difficult, adding to the already intense environment. It took many attempts to find the perfect conditions, waiting for the wind to blow in a favorable direction, clearing the air and allowing the molten lava to be seen in all its fiery glory.
The early days of the eruption offered a rare chance to capture the nascent crater and its expanding lava field, a testament to the volatile and ever-changing nature of volcanic activity. This image encapsulates the otherworldly atmosphere of the volcanic landscape, preserving a moment in time when the Earth’s raw power was on full display.
About the Fagradalsfjall Eruption
The 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall marked the beginning of a new active phase in the Reykjanes volcanic system, a region historically shaped by millennia of volcanic activity. Located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, this eruption was notable for its accessibility and visibility, drawing attention from geologists, photographers, and the public alike.
