Background information about Diamond Beach
The Diamond Beach is one of my favorite places to shoot; so many of the magnificent features of Iceland are present, including its unique ice formations, its black sands, and its beautiful seas. On top of this, it is south-facing, making it a magnificent spot to shoot the sunset or the Midnight Sun, which blesses Iceland throughout summer, as it reaches its lowest point.
It was the latter that I was eager to capture here just after the June equinox, and though I planned my trip extensively to ensure a clear, still day with few waves, I could not have predicted the magnificent crimson color that the sun would become as it touched the horizon.
This intense hue settled across the sky and formed a spectacular contrast with the vivid blue of the icebergs settled on the beach and the surf breaking against them. The contrasts here are magical even when conditions are less striking, with the bergs standing out dramatically against the volcanic black sands; the reds above simply added a perfect finish.
To make this photograph embody the sense of serenity I felt on this shoot, I lengthened the exposure just a little. As such, I was able to capture the movement of the gentle waves as they pushed and pulled from the sea. I also ensured that the camera was perfectly stable to retain the sculpted details of the icebergs, creating a composition that reflects the beauty of this ethereal Icelandic corner.
