Standing beneath this extraordinary maple feels like stepping into another world. From a distance, it appears graceful and elegant, but once I walked underneath its sweeping canopy, the tree revealed an entirely different character. Twisting branches stretched in every direction, while thousands of crimson leaves formed a living ceiling above me. Looking upward through the branches, I found endless layers of color, texture and light that transformed this relatively small tree into something monumental.

I spent time exploring different perspectives before settling on the composition that best expressed what I felt standing there—a quiet sense of strength wrapped in remarkable beauty. The contrast between the fiery red canopy and the fresh green surroundings immediately reminded me of rebirth and resilience, inspiring the title The Phoenix.

About the Location

This remarkable Japanese maple grows inside the renowned Portland Japanese Garden, widely regarded as one of the finest Japanese gardens outside Japan. The garden was created to celebrate harmony between nature, architecture and human craftsmanship, offering visitors a place of tranquillity in the heart of Oregon.

The maple itself has become one of the world's most recognized trees. After being photographed by Peter Lik, photographers from across the globe began travellling to Portland each autumn to witness its spectacular display of color. Although countless people visit to photograph it, experiencing the tree in person remains something truly unforgettable, especially when standing beneath its magnificent canopy.
