About the Photoshoot

As a nature photographer, I’m always chasing the kind of light that brings out the true character of a landscape — usually during golden hour, at sunrise or sunset. When I arrived at Stuðlagil Canyon, I had hoped for one of those moments. But nature had other plans, and they turned out to be even better. Under a blanket of overcast sky, the scene came alive in a completely different way. The soft, diffused light kept everything in a cool tone, making the canyon walls deeper in contrast and letting the green-blue glacial river pop vividly through the center. It felt crisp, fresh, and alive — a reminder that beauty doesn’t always wait for perfect light.

About Stuðlagil Canyon

Located in East Iceland, Stuðlagil Canyon is one of the country’s most extraordinary geological wonders. What sets it apart is the striking contrast between the turquoise waters of the Jökla River and the towering basalt columns that line the canyon walls. Formed by ancient volcanic activity and later revealed when the river’s water level dropped due to hydroelectric development, the canyon is a hidden gem that has only recently begun to receive the attention it deserves. Its remote setting and unique visual rhythm make it a favorite among photographers and nature lovers alike.
