Background information about Atlantic Breath
In Iceland, there is a whisper of magic in every corner. Old fairytales still linger in the misty wilderness about the meanings of the rocks and caves, as well as those who live in them, and to do this day, it is easy to see how such fables came about when stood alone in the wilds.
While many images portray this mystic wonder on the land, I hoped to capture it over the seas from which the Icelanders came, the same seas that gave them sustenance, survival and stories for over a millennium. For such a composition, there was no better subject than Reynisfjara beach.
The black silhouette of a barren cliff; basalt formations towering above the waters in the distance; a golden mist hovering above dark, rough seas: the South Coast site provides it all. The folklore around here adds an even deeper context to the site, as the lava pillars on the horizon are said to have once been two trolls who captured a ship offshore. As they attempted to wade it back to the beach, the sun rose and turned both to stone.
This incredibly rewarding shoot was conducted deep into the night to create the ethereal atmosphere that consumes those lucky enough to visit. I had to wait until the Midnight Sun had reached the lowest point in the sky to cast shadow over the ocean and landscapes, while still providing enough light to magnificently illuminate the spray of the waves. The dramatic color contrast this created led to a image that truly reflects both sides of Iceland’s folklore and magic: the transcendent allure and the menacing darkness.
