Background information about Mothership
About the Photoshoot
Iceland’s landscapes have long been shrouded in mysticism, inspiring legends of elves, trolls, and even tales of alien encounters. These stories are deeply rooted in the dramatic and often surreal natural beauty of the land. As a landscape photographer, I find it easy to understand why such myths arose. Iceland’s wilderness, with its misty hot springs, shimmering ice caves, and the ethereal dance of the Northern Lights, often feels like a gateway to another world.
On this particular shoot, I ventured to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon in the depths of winter. The temperature was bone-chilling, and the lagoon, typically filled with drifting icebergs in summer, was partially frozen over. The jagged ice shards along the bank were not icebergs, but rather fragments of the frozen lake, broken by the intense cold. The scene before me was unlike anything I had witnessed before, with these shards arranged in layers that resembled sheets of Arctic blue glass.
As the day progressed, the sky began to shift, with the low winter sun casting a violet hue over the landscape. Then, a particularly dense and defined cloud formation drifted into view, its edges glowing with an otherworldly purple light. The cloud’s shape, combined with the surreal landscape below, evoked images of the ancient gods of Norse mythology, or perhaps the modern myths of alien visitors drawn to Iceland’s mystical ley lines. The entire scene, with the icy shards on black sands, the mirror-like frozen waters, and the dramatic cloud above, felt as if it could have been captured on a distant, uncharted planet.
About Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, situated in southeast Iceland, is a breathtaking natural wonder that transforms dramatically with the seasons. In winter, the lagoon can partially freeze, creating a stark and mesmerizing landscape of ice and snow. The lagoon is connected to the ocean by a short river, and the interplay between the cold, icy environment and the sea creates a dynamic and ever-changing tableau. The ice shards along the banks are remnants of the frozen lagoon, broken and reshaped by the harsh winter conditions.
