Background information about Mothership

Iceland’s nature has long been said to have associations with the otherworldly. Whether it was the elves and trolls that haunted the people of the Middle Ages or the aliens that were predicted to land on Snaefellsjokull glacier in 1993, people have always found tales of other beings to tell in this land.
As a landscape photographer who spends so much time in Iceland’s breathtaking wilderness, I have no doubts as to why such legends began; in the mists of the hot springs, the dances of the Northern Lights, or the reflections of the ice caves, it is easy to consider the existence of a world beyond ours.
When capturing the icebergs on Diamond Beach, it was the dramatic formations in the clouds that triggered this sensation and became the focus of my shoot. Already, the evening was providing brilliant conditions. I had never seen the ice on the beach arranged in such an unusual way, collecting in layers of flat shards of Arctic blue rather than mismatched bergs.
The still seas were reflecting the violet hues in the skies, cast by the light of the Midnight Sun, bringing vivid shades throughout a world otherwise lacking in color. As the clouds above shifted, one greater and denser than the other wisps glided into frame. Something about its defined lines, distinctive shape, and the way in which its edges gleamed purple brought to mind the primeval beasts and gods of the Old Norse Religion, and the idea of aliens being drawn to the lay lines that allegedly cross Iceland.
This shot, with the ice on black sands, the mirror-like seas, and the great shape in the sky, felt as if it could have been taken on a distant planet as easily as it could have been taken on this one, meaning it could not be more befitting of Iceland.
