Background information about Iceland from Above
Every chance to shoot Iceland from a helicopter is an unforgettable privilege. As the wilderness unfolds beneath you, you not only get an unmatched perspective of the landscapes, but you can marvel over their unexpected diversity. This is particularly the case in the Highlands, where the forces of ice and fire have shaped natural wonders beyond the imagination.
Volcanic deserts surround verdant oases and moss-covered mountains; rivers flow in great networks through valleys, while glaciers cap the peaks year-round; many areas are dyed vivid colors by geothermal forces, others as lifeless as the surface of another planet.
I sought a composition that included as many of these unique and distinct environments as possible, and the only way to attain one was from the sky. This image, I believe, does the job perfectly. A row of vivid mountains run in a range from the center, their height and snow cover increasing the further back you look until they blend into the white snows of a distant glacier, which in turn merges with the clouds above. To their left, mossy slopes end abruptly into a field of barren lava.
To their right, a black sand valley split by veins of water contrasts with their vibrance. Though all the features were present, getting the right height and angle in the chopper took a fair amount of navigating; furthermore, significant cloud cover kept the landscapes dark and dulled their color. Finally, we reached an optimal position at an optimal time, as the skies opened in several places, illuminated spotlights on swathes of the landscapes that further added to the dramatic contrasts seen in Iceland from above.
