Some photographs come together only when every element finds its place. As the tide receded around Hvítserkur, the black volcanic sand revealed beautifully sculpted ripple patterns stretching toward the iconic sea stack. Resting quietly among them was a single moss-covered rock, glowing with vibrant green against the dark shoreline. Its shape immediately sparked the imagination—it looked remarkably like a dragon's egg waiting to hatch.

Rather than competing for attention, the foreground and the distant sea stack complement one another perfectly. The delicate pastel colours of dawn soften the dramatic coastal landscape, while the flowing sand patterns naturally guide the eye from the mysterious "egg" toward the legendary rock formation beyond. It is a scene that feels both grounded in reality and rich with fantasy.

About Hvítserkur

Standing just off the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes Peninsula in North Iceland, Hvítserkur is one of the country's most distinctive sea stacks. Rising approximately 15 meters (50 feet) above the sea, the basalt formation has been sculpted by thousands of years of wind, waves, and winter storms into its unmistakable shape.

According to Icelandic folklore, Hvítserkur was once a troll attempting to destroy nearby church bells. Caught by the rising sun before reaching his destination, he was turned to stone, where he remains to this day, forever watching over the coastline.

Others see an elephant drinking from the sea, while many imagine a dragon bending down to drink. The surrounding black sand beaches, tidal flats, and constantly changing light make Hvítserkur one of North Iceland's most rewarding destinations for landscape photography throughout the year.
