Background information about Awakening
The change of seasons in Iceland is fast and fleeting; a landscape that is cloaked in deep snow one week may be ice-free and verdant by the next. In the short interim between winter and summer, there is thus a fantastic opportunity for landscape photographers to capture Iceland in a way it is little seen, where the contrasting wildernesses blend magnificently.
I knew that the mountains of the uninhabited Highlands were the perfect place to capture this scene. Their vastness would reveal the scope of the changing landscapes, their dramatic features would make for perfect subjects, and their remoteness would allow me to fill my frame with natural wonder, in a land that still exists as if humans never had. Accessing the Highlands before winter had fully passed, however, was no mean feat.
The off-roads that led into them were coated in a blanket of snow, the rivers we had to cross were still framed with ice, and the weather was showing all its faces, changing from a raging blizzard to a pleasant spot of sunshine to a miserable downpour within minutes. We got as far into the region as we could by super-jeep, then persevered on foot, spending a night in a chilly mountain cabin and hoping for a great shoot tomorrow.
Luckily, our efforts were rewarded. From a tall ledge that we managed to hike to the next morning, I was presented with a beautiful landscape featuring what I sought to include in my images: a summer world of vivid green moss and a winter world of gleaming white snow woven together in a unique patchwork.
Even the story of the changing of the seasons was there; the right of the frame is basked in sunlight, showing a much more verdant side of the changing nature. In the shadows of the clouds and mountains to the right of the frame, far more is still cloaked in snow. As such, it appears as if the landscapes of Iceland are awakening from their winter slumber with the return of the summer sun.
