The change of seasons in Iceland is both rapid and breathtaking. A landscape cloaked in deep snow one week can be ice-free and verdant the next. During this fleeting period between winter and summer, landscape photographers have a unique opportunity to capture Iceland in a rarely seen state, where the contrasting wildernesses blend magnificently.
I knew that the uninhabited Highlands in the heart of Iceland were the perfect place to capture this scene. The vastness of the mountains would reveal the scope of the changing landscapes, their dramatic features would make for perfect subjects, and their remoteness would allow me to fill my frame with natural wonder, as if humans had never touched the land. Accessing the Highlands before winter had fully passed, however, was no mean feat.
The off-roads leading into the Highlands were coated in a blanket of snow, the rivers still framed with ice, and the weather was ever-changing—from raging blizzards to pleasant sunshine to miserable downpours within minutes. We ventured as far as possible by super-jeep, then persevered on foot, spending a night in a chilly mountain cabin, hopeful for a great shoot the next day.
Our efforts were rewarded. From a tall ledge that we managed to hike to the following morning, I was presented with a stunning landscape featuring exactly what I sought: a patchwork of vivid green moss and gleaming white snow. This unique scene encapsulated the blend of winter and summer, showing Iceland awakening from its winter slumber with the return of the summer sun.
About the Location
Storasula, an ancient, cone-shaped volcano mountain, is located in the central highlands of Iceland. Known for its diverse and dramatic landscapes, it is a prominent feature on the famous Laugavegur hiking trail, which stretches from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork. This region is renowned for its rugged terrain, providing a captivating backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.
The untouched, pristine environment of Storasula's remote and uninhabited nature ensures that it remains a perfect location for capturing the raw beauty of Iceland's highlands.
