Background information about Molten Topography
About the Photoshoot
Some landscapes can only be appreciated from above.
Photographed during the 2021 eruption at Fagradalsfjall, this aerial perspective reveals a world that is rarely seen with the naked eye. From the ground, the eruption was an overwhelming display of heat, sound, and movement. From the air, however, it became something entirely different—a living work of abstract art.
The glowing lava spread outward from the erupting vent like the veins of a leaf or the branches of a river delta, creating intricate patterns as molten rock slowly cooled and fractured across the landscape. Every minute the scene evolved, making each aerial photograph a unique record of an ever-changing natural masterpiece.
Seen from this vantage point, the eruption resembles a topographic map drawn not by ink, but by fire.
About the Fagradalsfjall Eruption
After lying dormant for nearly 800 years, the Reykjanes Peninsula returned to life in March 2021 when lava began erupting near Fagradalsfjall. The eruption marked the beginning of a new volcanic era for southwest Iceland, attracting scientists, photographers, and visitors from around the world eager to witness the birth of new land.
Unlike the explosive eruptions that often dominate headlines, Fagradalsfjall was primarily an effusive eruption. Rivers of basaltic lava flowed steadily across ancient lava fields, allowing observers to safely witness one of Earth's most powerful geological processes from a respectful distance.
The eruption transformed the surrounding valley day by day, creating fresh volcanic terrain that will remain part of Iceland's evolving landscape for generations to come. It also offered a rare opportunity to observe the forces that have shaped Iceland since the island first emerged from the North Atlantic millions of years ago.
About this Print
Molten Topography blurs the line between landscape photography and abstract art. At first glance, the glowing channels resemble an intricate network of rivers or roots, yet every luminous line is molten lava carving its way across newly formed volcanic ground.
The dramatic contrast between fiery orange lava and cooled black basalt creates a composition rich in texture, movement, and detail. As a landscape-oriented print, it works beautifully above a sofa, dining table, office desk, or feature wall, where its sweeping composition invites viewers to continually discover new shapes and patterns.
For collectors drawn to Iceland's raw volcanic power, Molten Topography offers a remarkable perspective of one of the country's most significant recent natural events—a moment when the Earth was actively creating itself before the camera's lens.
