Background information about Interlude of Light
The Story Behind the Artwork
Some landscapes deserve more than a single moment.
Over the years, I have returned to Kirkjufell Mountain more times than almost any other location in Iceland. Through every season, every kind of weather, and every quality of light, I have continued searching for new ways to portray one of the country's most photographed mountains. Each visit revealed a different personality—sometimes dramatic, sometimes peaceful, but never quite the same.
The idea for Interlude of Light emerged while revisiting this extensive body of work. Two photographs, captured years apart, immediately stood out. Both were taken from the same viewpoint overlooking Kirkjufellfoss, yet each told a completely different story. One revealed the quiet magic of an autumn night beneath the dancing Northern Lights. The other captured the warmth of a spectacular Icelandic summer sunset, where fiery clouds painted the sky above the mountain.
Although separated by time, the two images shared an almost identical perspective. With careful refinement, they were seamlessly aligned so that Kirkjufell flows naturally from one panel into the other. The result is not simply two photographs displayed side by side, but a single artistic vision that celebrates the mountain through two extraordinary moments that could never exist together in nature.
Interlude of Light invites viewers to experience the passage of time itself—where day meets night, summer meets autumn, warmth meets coolness, and two fleeting moments become one timeless work of art.
About Kirkjufell Mountain
Located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland, Kirkjufell is widely regarded as the country's most photographed mountain. Rising gracefully above the nearby fishing town of Grundarfjörður, its distinctive arrow-shaped profile has become one of Iceland's most recognizable natural landmarks.
The mountain's popularity extends beyond landscape photography. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognize it as the "Arrowhead Mountain," further cementing its place as one of Iceland's most iconic locations. Yet for photographers, Kirkjufell's appeal lies in its remarkable versatility. Northern Lights, midnight sun, dramatic storms, colourful autumn skies, and snow-covered winters each transform the mountain into an entirely new landscape.
With Kirkjufellfoss waterfall in the foreground and ever-changing natural light throughout the year, it continues to inspire photographers from around the world—and remains one of my favorite places to photograph.
About this Print
Interlude of Light is a premium diptych fine art print, designed to be displayed as two separate panels that together create one continuous composition. Unlike a traditional landscape print, the artwork intentionally includes a narrow gap between the two panels, allowing each photograph to breathe while maintaining the seamless visual flow of the mountain.
To achieve the intended presentation, we recommend the following overall display sizes and spacing:
| Final Display Size | Each Panel Size | Recommended Gap |
|---|---|---|
| 50 × 78.25 cm | 50 × 38.5 cm | 1.25 cm |
| 60 × 93.9 cm | 60 × 46.2 cm | 1.5 cm |
| 80 × 125.2 cm | 80 × 61.6 cm | 2 cm |
| 100 × 156.5 cm | 100 × 77 cm | 2.5 cm |
| 120 × 187.8 cm | 120 × 92.4 cm | 3 cm |
| 150 × 234.55 cm | 150 × 115.4 cm | 3.75 cm |
| Larger sizes | Available by quotation | Proportionally adjusted |
Available on premium paper, acrylic, and canvas, each panel is produced to the same exact dimensions to ensure perfect alignment once installed.
More than a landscape photograph, Interlude of Light is a conversation between two seasons, two moments, and two extraordinary displays of natural light. It offers collectors a fresh way to experience one of Iceland's most iconic mountains—not as a single snapshot in time, but as a celebration of its ever-changing beauty. Displayed above a sofa, dining table, bed, or office feature wall, its slightly wider panoramic format creates a striking focal point that rewards closer inspection and invites viewers to discover the subtle transition from one world into the next.
