There is no experience more incredible than photographing a volcano erupt in the endless snow plains of Iceland, nor one more rewarding. Fagradalsfjall’s dramatic emergence in 2021 was thus an opportunity I could not miss. It took several visits to this incredible site of the earth’s primordial power before I was able to attain a shot that revealed the extent of its magnificence and potential. From this breathtaking aerial perspective, I had the angle to capture a series of molten rivers snaking away from newly opened ravines and split into streams like the opening of skeletal hands.
The vivid orange of these creeping, glowing fingers is brought out by the newly created landscapes of black rock, so deep in their darkness that the fiery world is made even more ominous. I ensured that this terrain filled the foreground of the composition, before unfolding into the otherwise beautiful and innocent fields of endless virgin snow, adding further dimension to the already dramatic contrasts.
The ever-changing appearance of an erupting volcano constantly presents new photographic opportunities. Sometimes, these developments add a wealth of challenges to the shoot, but occasionally, will provide the perfect molten moment.
