Background information about The Drop
All waterfalls in Iceland bring something unique to the table for a landscape photographer, but few bring quite as much as Haifoss. The height of its drop; the sheer cliff, layered in strata, that it cascades down; the beautiful valley that leads from it; the bursting colors of the moss, lava and sky: there is no shortage of features to weave into a composition. There is a breathtaking nook on the opposite cliffs from Haifoss where I was able to set up my tripod and begin my shoot. With a long exposure, I was able to capture the flow of Haifoss in the form of a beautiful white ribbon, as well as bring out the vibrance of the surrounding landscapes. While, of course, Haifoss is the focus of the image, I wanted to be sure to have the river lead the eye away from the scene, and into the dark, barren landscapes of the backdrop in the left of the image. With this, it becomes clear that this feature is an awe-inspiring oasis in an otherwise bare wilderness that could belong to a lifeless planet.
