There’s something meditative about photographing glacier rivers from the air—watching nature’s handwriting unfold across the black sands. This image was captured during one of my aerial expeditions above South Iceland, where I sought to document the fine, braided streams formed by glacial meltwater. That day, as we ascended into the sky, the view revealed something unexpected: an intricate tapestry of white lines weaving over volcanic earth like threads spun from ice. Each shift in light highlighted new textures, and the deeper I looked, the more it resembled embroidery—stitched patterns too perfect to be accidental. I circled the area again and again, waiting for the alignment of light, color, and form. When the moment came, I pressed the shutter and held my breath, knowing that these fragile patterns might vanish within minutes, washed into a new design by the river’s constant flow.
About the Location
Glacial rivers are among Iceland’s most striking natural features—born from the meltwater of glaciers and etched into the landscape by volcanic and sedimentary forces. From above, they resemble living artwork, flowing over black sand deserts in endlessly changing formations. The area captured here lies in the southern highlands, a remote stretch of wilderness shaped by ice, fire, and time. These braided rivers shift constantly, redrawing themselves after each rainfall, each melt. They are a powerful reminder that in Iceland, even permanence is fluid.
