Background information about Forest of Waterways
The landscapes of Iceland, when looked at from above, appear completely different from how they look from ground level. With the country’s contours, diverse landscapes, and many waterways, it is often possible to use a bird’s eye view to create some unusual, creative, and awe-inspiring compositions.
It was a network of Highland rivers I was seeking to shoot from this angle for such an effect. Their sheer numbers, how they bleed into and out of one another, and their surroundings of black sand deserts had given me an idea of potential image, but of course, I would not be able to tell if I could make it a reality without actually embarking on a shoot. As such, I organized a helicopter trip to see the potential of my vision. Initially, it did not seem promising.
The overcast sky was not part of my fantasy as I feared the resulting images would be colorless and drab. As we reached the shooting destination, I also realized that taking the shot with a long exposure to capture the movement of the rivers from a helicopter was not going to be easy. Even so, I persisted - and was incredibly grateful that I did. Once we had angled our aerial vehicle to look over the rivers in the direction of their flow, a composition more striking than I had envisioned manifested before me. The white sky above reflected on the waters, and considering how they were shifting in and out of one another, appeared to me like a ghostly forest, with hundreds of leafless branches and pale trunks.
The black sands also had hints of red, bringing just a hint of color to tie the image together. Stabilizing the camera while shooting directly down from a moving chopper continued to pose a problem, but with patience and perseverance, I was finally able to capture the flow of the rivers to further create the illusion of a mystical forest of waterways.
