About the Photoshoot

There are certain places that quietly demand your patience, and the famous Wānaka Tree is one of them. Although photographers from around the world travel here every year, I wanted to create something that felt deeply personal rather than simply documenting an iconic location.

I arrived while the lake was almost perfectly still, allowing the gentle water to become part of the composition rather than a distraction. As the mountains faded softly into the background, the solitary willow stood in complete silence, almost as though time had paused around it. In those rare moments, the tree seemed less like a subject and more like a quiet companion, reminding me that strength is often found in stillness.

About the Location

Standing just offshore in Roys Bay on the shores of Lake Wānaka, this remarkable willow—known worldwide as That Wānaka Tree—has become one of New Zealand's most photographed natural landmarks. The tree is believed to have begun life as a willow fence post during the 1930s. Over time it took root beneath the water, surviving in an environment where its submerged roots have shaped its distinctive appearance.

Its international fame grew rapidly after a misty photograph of the tree won the 2014 New Zealand Geographic Photograph of the Year competition, inspiring photographers from across the globe to visit Lake Wānaka in search of their own interpretation. Framed by the Southern Alps and the pristine waters of the lake, the tree has become an enduring symbol of resilience, solitude and harmony with nature.
