Background information about Frozen Textures
From the depths of the ice caves of Iceland, one could easily think that they had entered another world. The vividness of the electric blues; the alien textures that make up the ceilings and walls; the virgin snow and gentle streams that decorate the ground: all are so beautiful they defy belief.
Due to their rareness and ever-changing formations, any opportunity to photograph such incredible phenomena is one I grab with both hands. On this particular shoot, I was particularly breath-taken both by this cave’s scale and the way the light was penetrating the transparent walls; the illusion was almost cathedral-like.
I was eager to include one of my fellow visitors in the frame, as their small stature would provide perspective, and having them basked in the light would add to the feeling that they were in a spiritual place in far-flung nature.
To further develop the ambiance of the mystical, I ensured over half of the shot was filled with the otherworldly ceiling of the cave, the colors, shapes, and texture of which were fascinating to behold. What I was particularly pleased with when looking back on this image was how their footprints can be followed through otherwise undisturbed snow. This brings some additional lines into the composition and reveals how untouched these natural gems are.
